The Romans widely grew barley. They even held festivals to it. Offerings of wheat and barley were made to the goddess.
It was one of the most essential foods from ancient times until the 20th century. Barley was a “poor man’s bread”, however modern consumer interest in nutrition and health may help restore barley’s status as a significant component in our nutrition.

You probably heard that more and more people are using superfoods in their diets!? If you belong to an older generation you probably think: “They are crazy. I have a regular and healthy diet. I don’t need any icky shake.” Maybe you do eat green vegetables, meat, and fruits – but is it enough!?
In all honesty, we grew up with the general knowledge that shakes are for bodybuilders, not for a regular “Joe”. And yet, this superfood is one of the first cultivated grains as early as 10.000 years ago. A natural-health supplement that will boost your health.
Barley grass juice powder is rich in vitamins A, C, B and minerals iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. It is also very high in absorbable protein and contains 20 amino acids, including 8 of the essential amino acids that body can’t produce itself.
Today young barley are using both – bodybuilders, as well as “regular Joes”.
People always knew that natural remedies are hiding exclusively in plants. Even today, we are surprised by some knowledge about the medicinal properties of some plants from our nearest environment.
This is the case with barley. As a superfood, it has an extraordinary effect on the whole organism, especially in the form of green barley juice.
Miraculous effects were discovered in early 80-is. It became well-known that young barley contains substances with the most significant healing effect that our body craves.
It was a discovery of Dr. Yoshide Hagiwara, MD of the University of Kumamoto, Japan. Also, this guy is one of the founders of the “Health Society” in Japan. His 20-is wasn’t about chasing girls:-), but about preparing vitamins and other herbal remedies.
Well-known facts of the efficiency of young barley juice are the result of 13 years research aimed to stop the degradation and aging of the cells. The biochemical composition gives this plant exceptional, therapeutic properties, especially the ability to slow down the aging of the cells. Extreme presence of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes contributes to the perfect functioning of the human organism.
In comparisons with other plants, young barley contains:
- over 250 times VITAMIN A than a green salad
- over 25 times more POTASSIUM than bananas
- over 11 times more CALCIUM than milk
- over 11 times more IRON than celery
- over 7 times more VITAMIN C than an orange
Why is barley juice SO desirable?
He, he. . . Ok, why is this superfood so desirable?! Because it will fight cancer by carrying oxygen through the body. Remember oxygen is a great fighter against every illness, especially cancer. Barley is helping blood to carry oxygen in the whole body. Furthermore, it protects you from radiation and cellular damage, gives you energy, boosts your strength. Also fights addiction from alcohol, nicotine, coffee, drugs, and even sugar sweets.
Some substances in barley juice cause binding of bile acids in the intestine, causing them to merge with fecal waste. Result: body cholesterol is being broken down. It is generally believed that this beneficial effect is the result of increased intestinal viscosity that barley does when you absorbed it.
So, go barley! 🙂

Superfood for super conditions!
Although the Himalaya’s peaks for years have fascinated mountaineers in the desire to conquer this mountain, the spirit of these lands is not to conquer but to live with. On the territory of Tibet, there has always been a very specific breed of people. Not only, they are different physically, but also spiritually. In relation to the rest of humanity, Tibetans are considered to be the healthiest and happiest people in the world.
Life above 3000 m is hard! Hard to walk, work, eat and breath. Not only that the thin air cause gasping and fatigue, but it also swells the brain and fills the lungs with fluid. Lower air pressure at altitude means fewer oxygen molecules for every lungful of air. People who live and travel at high attitude respond to the lack of oxygen by making more hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying component of the human blood).
Researchers are still trying to understand how Tibetans get enough oxygen to their tissue. High attitude natives don’t have oxygen problems, and not only just because they are used to it. Their’s secret? You guess it! Barley! In every form. Tibetan barley farmers may have experimented with a variety of crop types to see which worked the best in such a harsh environment.
Barley reflects the Tibetan landscape of mountains and plateaus. It is unclear how it moved to some extreme environment like Tibetan Plateau, but now we know why.
Grain barley is invaluable for maintaining optimum human health because of its richness in plant fibers, which have a positive effect on the digestive tract.
Significant benefits of barley were also known by American Indians, who ate this young plant. Their livestock lived longer and gave more because of the barley grass diet. On the other part of the world, you can see the fact that the Chinese did the same, especially during famous Ming dynasty. For them, these young leaflets represented a refreshing remedy, which was highly appreciated.
Soooo… Do you need more reasons to include it in your diet?
Yummy shake with barley powder
When I first opened the container It smelled very ‘green’. But honestly, what I expected?! It does taste a little bitter, but at least it dissolves pretty easily in juice and smoothies, which help mask the taste.
Barley grass powder is obtained by dehydrating fresh juice from young barley, at mild hot temperatures, so that the enzyme remains active. That makes it natural and harmless so you can take 1-2 teaspoon daily dissolved in fruit juice, yogurt or with honey and water.
First, stir well to dissolve. However, it’s best to leave it for several minutes and then drink it.
This juice has some strong smell and taste but you can leverage that by adding fruit or you can make quick recipes. Here are some suggestions:
